There is much to be said about small independent companies that produce small series of unique handmade watches. But sometimes you just want the security and excellence based on the time of a great established watchmaker. Tissot is part of the Swatch Group, a Swiss group considered the largest manufacturer and distributor of watches in the world.
We’re going to take a look at the Tissot T095.417.11.047.00 Quickster stainless steel blue dial watch, and when you see the quality we think you’ll agree that when it comes to watch companies, sometimes bigger is better.
There are three sub-dials, and in a design achievement they manage not to interfere with the main indices.. Each sub-dial is slightly recessed with a high-grade ring that gives the dial a multi-layered appearance. If you are not familiar with chronograph watches, you should know that the thin third hand in the main digit is not the second hand. The seconds are tracked in the lowest subdial, marked in increments of ten. On the edge of the watch you will find a voluminous crown, flanked by two clasps. The gear-shaped and screwed crown bears the Tissot “T” and is used to set the time and date. The buttons on both sides operate the chronograph function. The lower button sends the chronograph second hand with counterweight to the 12 o’clock position. The top button starts the chronograph. The two upper auxiliary digits track the elapsed time in several intervals; the right part at intervals of one minute, the left part at intervals of five minutes.
The case is 42 mm in diameter and 10 mm thick. It’s a good size for people who find the midpoint between a tiny feminine-looking watch and Big Ben on the wrist. The dial window is made of flat, scratch-resistant, anti-reflective sapphire. The watch is waterproof up to 100 meters. So do not be afraid to wash the dishes or rest in your kids’ pool, just do not take it as a scuba diving.
The industrial-looking bracelet is made of segmented stainless steel, and if you look closely, you’ll see it has a subtle double tone that’s a bit darker in the center of the band than at the edges. In a watch full of detailed processing, even the band has its own accents, including a raised letter T on the clasp and the name of Tissot and the founding year (1853) inscribed on the caseback. The strap is 19 mm wide, again a reasonable intermediate size and eight inches long, so it is well used on large wrists. The deployment clasp provides a comfortable yet comfortable fit. In general, the segmented band is a plus if you value a custom setting for your wrist, a minus if you do not want you to go to your local jewelry store to remove links.
Tissot T095.417.11.047.00 Quickster stainless steel blue dial watch movement is Swiss quartz—no mainspring or tiny, quintessentially-Swiss movement gears on display here. In fact, the back of the case is made of stainless steel so you can not see the inside of the watch. And if it makes a difference to you, this also means the second hand does its job with a tick, not a sweep. But look to the positive side: with the quartz movement you have a more precise time and less maintenance than most mechanical watches.
This is a striking and elegant watch, sharp enough for the office, but casual enough for the garden grill. The dial is very dark—you might think it’s black, but on closer inspection you’ll see it’s actually a handsome navy blue with a slightly granulated texture. The Tissot mark appears just below the 12 o’clock position. The fixed stainless steel bezel shines with a lighter blue than the dial, a little more than the rich tone of lapis lazuli. All signs and markers on the dial and bezel are ivory-white and easy to read. The hands of minutes and extra long hours are illuminated, as are the indexes of “12” and main time. Twelve o’clock is the only position designated with Arabic numerals. The remaining hours are marked with bold and elongated stock indexes that are not printed, with small intermediate markers.
